He tries so hard to howl
The fact he still can’t howl properly is funny.
You know, one of the most endearing, and sometimes hilarious, things about owning a dog is watching them try to communicate. For many hound owners, that often means experiencing the majestic, sometimes mournful, sound of a howl. But then there's my guy. Oh, he tries so hard to join the chorus, bless his heart, but his attempts are less 'wolf calling to the moon' and more 'squeaky toy having an existential crisis'! I've always been fascinated by why hounds howl. It’s deeply ingrained in their DNA, a way to signal their presence, call their pack, or even respond to high-pitched sounds like sirens. My hound definitely gets the instinct part right; he hears a fire truck a mile away, or even sometimes just another dog barking down the street, and his ears perk up. You can see the determination in his eyes, the deep breath he takes, preparing for that grand vocal performance. And then... out comes this sound. It’s not quite a bark, not quite a yip, and definitely not the deep, resonant howl you'd expect from a dog his size. It starts with a shaky 'wooo-oooh,' then often devolves into a series of chokes and gurgles, sometimes ending in a high-pitched squeak that sounds like he’s stepped on his own tail. My favorite is when he tries to hold a note, and it just fizzles out into a whimper. It's truly a spectacle! One evening, we were watching a nature documentary, and a wolf let out a powerful howl. My hound, who was completely asleep just moments before, shot upright, looked at the TV, and then at me, as if to say, 'I can do that!' He puffed up his chest, pointed his snout to the ceiling, and gave it his all. The result? A sound eerily similar to a rusty gate creaking open. My partner and I just burst out laughing, and he looked so confused, wagging his tail, clearly proud of his 'achievement.' It's become one of his most charming quirks. Whenever he starts his peculiar vocalizations, we can't help but smile. It’s a reminder that not every dog needs to be a perfect specimen of their breed's typical traits to be utterly wonderful. His imperfect howls are a perfect reflection of his unique personality – a little bit clumsy, a lot goofy, and full of heart. Do any of your pets have a funny, unique way of communicating? I'd love to hear about their adorable quirks! Sometimes, the things they can't quite do perfectly are what make them the most lovable.
