Reflecting on idols in my own life, I've realized that what we often consider harmless priorities can silently take the place of what truly matters spiritually. For instance, investing excessive time into a career, though rewarding, sometimes left me feeling disconnected and anxious. Similarly, social media, while useful for connection, became a source of distraction and comparison that affected my peace of mind. Understanding idols as anything placed above our relationship with God reshaped how I evaluate my daily choices. It’s not just the obvious objects but also desires and comforts that can subtly become idols. This realization prompted me to set boundaries—like designated offline times—and to consciously nurture my spiritual practice. Control and comfort are particularly tricky because they feel necessary for security. But constantly striving to maintain control can breed anxiety and frustration. Letting go, in contrast, brought a sense of freedom and deeper trust. Parenting added another layer, as it's easy to over-prioritize children to the point of neglecting personal and spiritual well-being. This journey is ongoing, but recognizing idols in their various forms helps maintain a balanced life. By regularly reflecting on what holds the highest place in my heart, I’m better equipped to lower any idol that interferes with my relationship with God and focus on what truly enriches my spirit.
