... Read moreOMG, if you haven't been to the Minnesota State Fair, you are seriously missing out on "The Great Minnesota Get-Together"! Every August, this incredible annual event transforms St. Paul into a bustling, crowded wonderland, attracting nearly 2 million visitors. It's truly a celebration of everything Minnesota, and my recent visit left me with so many amazing memories (and a very full stomach!).
Let's talk about the food first, because for me, that's the real star of the show. The State Fair is legendary for its strange foods, and almost everything is fried and served on a stick – it’s a foodie paradise! Of course, I had to grab the classics: a piping hot corndog, perfectly golden cheese curds, and a bag of warm, sugary mini donuts. But the adventure doesn't stop there. Each year, they introduce wild new foods, and this time I bravely tried the spaghetti-on-a-stick, which was surprisingly delicious! And yes, hotdish-on-a-stick is a real thing, and it’s a must-try for the sheer novelty. Don't even get me started on the deep-fried candy bars – pure indulgence! The sheer variety of food stalls is astounding; you could spend days just trying to sample everything.
Beyond the epic culinary journey, the fair is packed with so much entertainment and so many attractions. The Midway, with its vibrant lights and thrilling carnival rides like the tilt-a-whirls and funhouses, is a feast for the senses. It’s probably a good idea to hit those before you dive into the hotdish-on-a-stick, though! I also loved wandering through the agricultural exhibits, even though, like many, I just glanced at the farm animals. But places like the butter-carving competition and the intricate art made out of seeds truly showcase Minnesota's unique traditions. There are live musical performances happening all day, adding to the vibrant atmosphere. It really is a grand gathering of the Minnesota State Fair, just like the 'WOW!' and 'OMG!' sentiments you see everywhere suggest.
It's fascinating to think about how this annual event has evolved since it first started in 1859. While it still holds onto its agricultural roots, it's become so much more – a place where tradition meets innovation, and where everyone can find something to love. From the moment you enter the crowded pathways, you feel an incredible sense of community and excitement. It's more than just a fair; it’s a cherished summer highlight that truly lives up to its nickname, "The Great Minnesota Get-Together".
