adulting in college (a trip to the vet)

adulting in college is never an easy feat, and everytime i’m in an “adult” situation I tend to freak out more than necessary. the most recent example of this is today, toby (my esa) and first born had an allergic reaction and to say I flipped out was an understatment.

to understand why I truly flipped I have to give you some background info. toby has been sick these past few days with diarrhea and had thrown up on one occasion as well.

this wasn’t a cause for alarm becuase he has had these symtoms before and its usally gone within a few days, along with that, we live in nyc and no matter how hard I try he always trys to eat stuff off the ground, so again I thought that was the extent of what we were adulting with this week.

WRONG on a completely seperate event, he woke up this morning with a swollen face, however I thought these were all related events and lost it, I called my mom crying (also was dealing with severe PTSD here too)

to make a long story short, I had a puppy prior to toby and a month after I got him we were in and out of the hospital until he passed away due to a neuro condition.

all this to say I was not handling this situation well.

I also don’t have a vet in new york, and he’s only seen my hometown vet a few times, so not only did I have to get him to a vet I had to find one that I trusted and if i’m being real the one with the best ratings.

thank god, the first one I googled was not only the closest but had pretty good ratings, so I booked an appointment and high tailed it out of my dorm at lightning speed.

also pro tip: bring every single vet document you have for your dog cause it saves you so much time from having to answer tons of questions.

anyways the vet who we saw was incredibly helpful and said that the case of diarreah and the allergic reaction were seperate and that he was going to be okay.

he shot him up with some steroids and gave us a basketful of goodies, I payed my 300 dollar vet bill (which if i’m being honest I totally thought I was gonna pay 1000 dollars) so I honestly thought for the amount of stuff he gave me and the shots and vet visit, 300 bucks was a steal. then we were sent on our way!

as i’m writing this i’m happy to report he is doing just fine and i’m having a relaxing beverage to calm myself from this whirlwind of a day!

a reminder that adulting is hard but you will get through it!!

... Read moreAdulting is a challenging phase that many college students face, especially when it comes to managing responsibilities like pet care. It's essential to have a reliable veterinarian, as they can provide guidance and support in emergencies. When you find yourself in a similar situation, consider these tips: 1. **Research Vets**: Use online reviews and ratings to find well-reviewed veterinarians in your area. Websites like Yelp and Google can provide insights into other pet owners' experiences. 2. **Prepare Documentation**: Keep your pet's medical records handy to expedite the vet visit. This documentation can include vaccination records, previous health issues, and any medications your pet is currently taking. It saves time and helps the vet provide the best care. 3. **Stay Calm**: It's natural to feel anxious during emergencies, especially when a beloved pet is involved. Take deep breaths and try to stay composed, as your pets can pick up on your emotions. 4. **Reach Out for Support**: If you're feeling overwhelmed, don't hesitate to call friends or family who can offer emotional support. Sharing your worries can help you process the situation better. 5. **Follow-Up**: After the vet visit, ensure you follow any care instructions given by the veterinarian. Monitor your pet for any changes in behavior or health, and don't hesitate to reach out to the vet for further advice if needed. Navigating adulting can be daunting, especially when it includes urgent vet visits. Remember, these experiences can help build your confidence and improve your decision-making skills as you transition into adulthood!
