what I learned from moving to NYC alone. (college)

1) It’s not for everybody.

if you’ve ever had an urge to move to this city, and have successfully done it, you know that it’s not always as glamorous as it sounds. it’s expensive, loud and plain overstimulating. and it’s completely okay if you get there and quickly realize it’s not your vibe. i’ve known lots of people that get there and find out they aren’t cut out for that type of living. and it’s important to know that you tried it and you don’t have to love it.

2) You’re surrounded by millions of people but you can feel incredibly alone.

if you’re an introvert in NYC it’s honestly that much harder to form friendships. i’ve found that people in my school are very extroverted and it often takes me quite awhile to find “my people”. which has also lead to me spending majority of time in my dorm. which again is not always my favorite way to spend my time.

3) Homesicknesses can be debilitating.

when I first moved to the city I thought I was gonna breeze past that feeling. I was surrounded by things to do and didn’t think i’d have time to miss home that much. WRONG I missed home so much that I had to take an online semester and move back home because I was just not doing okay mentally.

4) It has the most addicting energy.

As much as it sounds like I hate nyc, on the contrary I do adore it. I couldn’t picture living anywhere else. In this fast paced city i’ve actually learned the importance of being still and slowing down. Im looking forward to building a life here and I can’t wait for the future!

... Read moreMoving to New York City can be an exhilarating yet challenging experience, especially for college students embarking on this journey alone. The financial burden of living in one of the world's most expensive cities often catches newcomers off guard. It's vital to budget wisely and explore scholarships or part-time job opportunities to ease the financial strain. Social adjustments are also significant. NYC's vibrant but fast-paced environment can lead to feelings of isolation despite being surrounded by millions. Joining clubs, attending community events, and engaging in campus activities can help students build meaningful connections and combat loneliness. Additionally, it’s important to acknowledge the emotional toll that homesickness can have. The initial excitement may fade, leading to bouts of longing for the familiarity of home. Taking time for self-care, establishing a routine, and seeking support from friends or counselors can be beneficial for mental health during this transition. Lastly, many newcomers discover a unique energy in NYC that is unmatched. This energy can motivate personal growth and foster a sense of adventure. Embracing the city's diversity and opportunities can transform the experience into one of empowerment and excitement for the future. By sharing these insights, the hope is to guide others through the challenges and joys of this journey.
