Interested in being an instructor? (college edt.)
If you’re thinking about becoming a Pilates instructor, here’s what I wish I knew before I started.
1. It’s a serious time commitment.
I’m in the beginning of my classical Pilates certification, and my program requires around 600 hours to complete, between classes, practice teaching, observation, and test-outs. Most people take 6–12 months to finish. It’s doable, but it takes real dedication and structure, especially if you’re balancing school or a job.
2. Do your research.
Not all programs are created equal. Look into who’s teaching, what lineage they follow, and if it aligns with what you want to represent. This is an investment in your foundation, so pick wisely.
3. Stay true to the system.
Pilates has evolved into so many forms, but classical training keeps you closest to what Joseph Pilates actually created, and for me, that’s what makes the work feel authentic. It’s where the depth, control, and artistry really come alive.
It’s not easy. You’ll be challenged, humbled, and exhausted sometimes.
But if you love the method, if you feel the difference it makes, it’s one of the most fulfilling things you can do. 🤍
