How to make a double bow baby hat

As a labor and delivery nurse this is one of my favorite things to do in the rare time I have to sit down and not catch up on anything. My work bestie and I found the double bow hat, and I have yet to go back and make a single bow hat. They're just too cute 🎀

You will need 2 hats to complete ONE bow hat.

-Fold and cut a notch in your first hat

-Cut the top off the second hat

-Unfold the second hat, (it will look like a long sock) and cut into 2 pieces(about 60/40 vs evenly in half)

-Fold the edges of both of these cut pieces and flip inside out so the fold is in the middle and the outside is smooth

-Pull the smaller piece through the middle of the notch you cut out in the original hat

-Lay the larger piece flat over the vertical piece that was initially pulled through

-Tie the smaller piece around the larger flat piece you just laid flat

-DONE, you have a double bow hat🎀💁🏼‍♀️🩷👶🏼

... Read moreThere's nothing quite like the joy of creating something special for a little one, especially when it's as adorable and practical as a double bow baby hat. When I first discovered this method with my work bestie, I was hooked. It’s such a simple yet impactful way to add a personal touch to those sweet newborn hospital hats, transforming them from basic to utterly charming. Why Go Double? The Charm of a Double Bow Baby Hat You might be wondering, why a double bow? While a single bow is lovely, the double bow adds an extra layer of cuteness and a unique dimension that truly stands out. It gives the hat a fuller, more luxurious feel, making it an instant conversation starter. For me, it's about making something that feels a little more custom and special, perfect for those first precious photos or as a thoughtful gift. Plus, once you master the technique, you'll see how easy it is to replicate, leading to a collection of beautiful bow hats in no time. Choosing Your Materials: The Foundation of a Great Bow Hat The secret to a fantastic double bow baby hat lies in selecting the right materials. My go-to is always the soft, stretchy kind, much like the hospital-style baby hat material you often find. These hats are typically made from a lightweight, breathable knit fabric that's gentle on a newborn's delicate skin. When picking out your two hats, consider a fun color combination or even a patterned hat paired with a solid one to make your bow pop. The key is ensuring both hats have a good amount of stretch, as this makes the cutting and folding process much smoother and ensures a comfortable fit for the baby. You can often find these plain newborn hats in multi-packs, making this a very budget-friendly DIY! Tips for a Perfect Bow: Mastering the Art of the Tie While the steps are straightforward, a few little tips can elevate your double bow hat from good to absolutely perfect. When you're cutting the notch in your first hat, aim for a clean, small snip – you don't want it to be too wide, or it might compromise the hat's structure. For the second hat, the 60/40 split is crucial. This uneven split ensures you have a smaller piece for the bow's center and a larger, flatter piece to create the main bow loops. When folding the edges of your cut pieces, make sure they are smooth and even; this will give your finished bow a polished look. Finally, when you're tying the smaller piece around the larger one, take your time to adjust the loops. You want them to be symmetrical and full before securing the knot. Practice makes perfect, and soon you'll be making a bow hat that looks professionally made! Expanding Your DIY Skills: Beyond the Double Bow This basic technique for making a bow for a hat is incredibly versatile. Once you're comfortable with the double bow, you can easily adapt it to create single bow hats by simply using a single strip for the bow. You can also experiment with different sizes of bows by varying the width of your fabric strips. Crafters can even use this method to create adorable baby headband bows DIY projects by attaching the finished bow to a soft elastic headband. The possibilities are endless, allowing you to personalize accessories for every outfit or occasion. This simple tutorial opens up a whole world of creative baby accessories, perfect for gifting, baby showers, or just adding a touch of handmade love to your little one's wardrobe.
