How I Repaired My Skin Barrier

HOW I REPAIRED MY SKIN BARRIER:

With the constant incorrect use of Retin-A I eventually destroyed my skin barrier.

I’m talking my face was extremely red, would burn and feel hot, would sting to the touch, and applying moisturizer or any skincare product felt like I was pouring hot water on it.

And then it would peel.

It was the absolute worst!

Because I could not continue on like that, I dove into research on how to repair my skin barrier. I came across two things that I eventually added to my routine.

Tip Number 1: Snail Mucin

-I added snail mucin into my skincare routine morning and night

-pulls moisture into the skin

-promotes healthy hydration of the skin

-I apply this on damp skin and then continue with rest of my skin care products

-has completely soothed my irritated skin from having a damaged skin barrier

Tip Number 2: Skincare Order

-I used to apply my Retin-A on damp bare skin (do NOT do this!! This probably single handedly destroyed my skin barrier)

-now I apply the snail mucin, my moisturizer (let it dry), and then Retin-A as my LAST step

-this has been a complete game changer for me!

-no more irritated skin and now my skin loves the Retin-A

Now my skin is hydrated, glowy, plump, and not dry and flakey. It loves when I apply my Retin-A and I honestly feel like it works better now that my skin barrier is healthy.

If you are struggling with your skin barrier I highly suggest trying snail mucin on damp skin first, and then looking into the order of your skincare products to make sure you are layering them correctly!

My own journey with Retin-A taught me a tough lesson about how easily you can accidentally set back your skin's health. What many people don't realize is that a damaged skin barrier can actually make your acne *worse*. When your skin barrier isn't functioning properly, it loses moisture, becomes inflamed, and can't effectively protect against bacteria or irritants, leading to more breakouts and slower healing. That red, burning feeling? Totally a sign your skin is crying for help! Beyond the amazing power of snail mucin essence for soothing irritation and pulling moisture into the skin – which was a total game-changer for me – there are a few more things I learned that really solidified my skin barrier repair journey, especially for maintaining that healthy, hydrated skin barrier glow and managing acne. First, if you're using powerful actives like Retin-A or other retinoids for acne, how you introduce and use them is crucial. I made the mistake of going in strong, but now I swear by the 'sandwich method' or buffering. This means applying a daily facial moisturizer (like the Vanicream one I mentioned) before your retinoid, letting it absorb, then applying a pea-sized amount of your retinoid gel, and sometimes even another layer of moisturizer on top. This dramatically reduces irritation while still allowing the retinoid to work its magic on acne without further compromising your barrier. It’s all about a correct application order to prevent that stinging and peeling. Secondly, look for products with ceramides, hyaluronic acid, and niacinamide. These aren't just trendy ingredients; they are fundamental building blocks for a strong skin barrier. Ceramides are like the 'mortar' between your skin cells, preventing moisture loss. Hyaluronic acid is incredible for hydration, and niacinamide can help with redness, inflammation, and even improve skin texture – all vital for acne skin barrier repair. I found incorporating a serum with niacinamide really complemented my snail mucin. Lastly, and this might seem obvious, but gentle cleansing is paramount. Avoid harsh foaming cleansers that strip your skin. Opt for creamy, hydrating cleansers that leave your skin feeling soft, not tight. And please, no scrubbing! Be patient and consistent. Achieving that radiant, hydrated skin and a truly healthy and glowing complexion after a damaged barrier takes time, but by nurturing your skin with the right steps and ingredients, you absolutely can get there. It’s been a journey for me, but seeing my skin transform from red and irritated to plump and glowy has been incredibly rewarding!
