Homeschool Lesson Planning for my 1st Grader 🧬🔬
✨How I plan science for 1st grade (and keep it stress-free) ✨
Instead of trying to plan every single day at once, I like to start with a year-at-a-glance overview. This way, I know the main themes we’ll cover, but I can adjust along the way depending on what excites my kids.
Here’s what our year looks like:
🌱 Life Science → Plants & animals, life cycles, habitats
🌎 Earth Science → Weather, natural resources, conservation
🔬 Physical Science → States of matter, light & sound, simple machines
🚀 Space Science → The solar system, astronauts, stars
🧠Human Body & Senses → Exploring how our bodies work
This big-picture guide goes into my binder 📒 (on cardstock of course 😉) and later, I’ll break it down into weekly lesson plans. Should I turn this into a mini series by subject👀

Effective homeschooling lesson planning balances structure with flexibility, especially for young learners in 1st grade. This approach begins with a comprehensive year-at-a-glance outline divided into thematic science units, which provides an overall framework while allowing adjustments based on the child's interests and learning pace. The outlined year consists of six key units spread over 36 weeks, each lasting approximately six weeks. This pacing helps avoid overwhelm and supports deeper understanding. The units include: 1. Life Science - focusing on plants, animals, life cycles, and habitats, encouraging observation and hands-on activities such as growing bean plants and nature scavenger hunts. Introducing classification groups like mammals, birds, and reptiles enriches the learning experience and builds foundational biology knowledge. 2. Earth Science - covering weather patterns, natural resources, conservation, and landforms with hands-on projects like weather charting and rock sorting. This unit fosters environmental awareness and scientific observation skills. 3. Physical Science - exploring states of matter, light and sound, magnets, simple machines (levers, pulleys), and vibrations. Using experiments such as shadow puppetry and magnet scavenger hunts makes concepts tangible and exciting. 4. Space Science - introducing the solar system, phases of the moon, astronauts, and space exploration. Activities like moon phase projects, planet fact books, and stargazing combine creativity and exploration. 5. Human Body & Senses - delving into the five senses and major body parts with functions related to health, hygiene, nutrition, and exercise. Engage learners through sensory games and collages that reinforce body awareness and healthy habits. 6. Review & STEM Challenges - reinforcing topics via small experiments and hands-on engineering challenges, such as egg drop projects and building bridges from craft sticks. These activities promote critical thinking and problem-solving. This plan utilizes a binder system on cardstock for organization and encourages breaking down the broad overview into weekly lesson plans. The yearly design allows flexibility, making homeschool science enjoyable and adaptable to each child’s curiosity. Using hashtags like #homeschoolscience and #secularhomeschool connects families with wider communities sharing resources and support. Incorporating these elements ensures a balanced, engaging, and educational science curriculum that nurtures a 1st grader’s wonder and discovery in a manageable, stress-free manner.

Oh I love this! Great lineup here! We’re a bit young for school (9 months lol) but we love science! Our newest library addition…
