Obadiah

This past Sunday at church, my pastor was reading in Obadiah. He was explaining how through the 12 prophets of the Old Testament, that each one of their stories related to one main idea. How our hearts are consumed with things of this world rather than the Lord. In Obadiah, God tells him a message to tell to the Edomites. They had lots of built-up hatred towards Israel. The Edomites were disobeying God, so God decides to do something about it.

This story in the bible is also happening at this very moment all around the world. If we have our hearts consumed with hatred and negativity, God will get rid of it before it consumes us. So that we may have room only for Gods love. Let this be a reminder to you today, whatever is within your heart, it should embody the love and joy of the Lord. What you consume is what you put out!

... Read moreAfter hearing my pastor's powerful sermon on Obadiah, I felt moved to dive deeper into this often-overlooked book of the Bible. It's easy to skim past the shorter prophets, but Obadiah holds such a profound message, especially for our modern lives. I pulled out my Bible, opened to Obadiah 12, much like the image shows with those thoughtful handwritten notes in the margin, and settled in with my white coffee cup and writing tools, ready to explore further. The story of the Edomites and their hatred for Israel isn't just ancient history; it's a mirror reflecting the negativity and resentment that can creep into our own hearts. Obadiah, a prophet whose name means 'servant of the Lord,' delivers God's judgment against Edom for their pride and for rejoicing in Israel's downfall. Verse 12 truly hits home: 'You should not have gloated over your brother in the day of his misfortune; you should not have rejoiced over the people of Judah in the day of their destruction; you should not have boasted in the day of distress.' This isn't just about Edom; it's a universal warning against schadenfreude, pride, and a lack of compassion for others. One of the most striking lessons from Obadiah is that God sees *everything*. He sees the hidden motives, the secret resentments, and the quiet satisfaction we might feel when someone else stumbles. It’s a sobering thought, but also a comforting one, because it means He also sees our struggles and our desire to change. The book reminds us that God is just, and He will address all injustice. But more importantly, it calls us to self-reflection. Are there 'Edomite' tendencies in my own heart? Am I harboring ill will, or silently celebrating someone else's failures? What does it truly mean to 'make room for God's love,' as my pastor preached? For me, it's an active process. It begins with acknowledging those negative emotions and bringing them before God. It's about consciously choosing forgiveness, compassion, and empathy, even when it feels difficult. It's about filling my mind with scripture and prayer instead of consuming endless news cycles or social media feeds that often breed comparison and negativity. Just as I take notes when I study, I'm trying to 'write' these lessons onto my heart. The vision of Obadiah isn't just a prophecy of doom; it's a prophecy of hope and restoration for God's people, and by extension, for us when we align our hearts with His. It teaches us that hatred consumes not only the one hated but also the one who hates. God's desire is not for us to be consumed by earthly things or negative emotions but to be filled with His divine presence, which brings true joy and peace. This journey of heart transformation is ongoing, but understanding the core lessons from Obadiah gives me a practical framework to pursue it. It's a reminder that what we *consume*—whether it's spiritual food, thoughts, or emotions—is indeed what we put out into the world.

Obadiah - God of the Towering Mountain
Most of Obadiah's prophecy is judgment on the foreign nation of Edom. Therefore, Obadiah is one of only three prophets who pronounced judgment primarily on other nations. The others are the prophets Nahum and Habakkuk.
