What I’ve learned from being a fellow

Just a few things I learned during my time as a laboratory fellow over my first year:

1. Laboratory skills

My skills at simple things like pipetting and being able to open up a microtube with one hand has greatly improved. While I did some of this in college in a lab I’m spending way more time in the lab now (everyday 9-5). While it’s not all that I’m doing I’m spending a lot of time on the bench.

2. Time management

I have a lot to get through in a day. At first I always stayed late because i overestimated what I could get done in a day. Now I’m trying to set realistic goals for myself.

3. Patience

Not every skill comes overnight. I keep having to remind myself this. I’m always hardest on myself but I’m trying to remind myself I’m not dumb I just haven’t been taught yet.

One significant aspect of growth in this role is the acquisition of essential laboratory skills. From mastering pipetting techniques to efficient handling of microtubes, these hands-on experiences build foundational competencies crucial for any scientific endeavor. Moreover, as responsibilities increase, the importance of effective time management cannot be overstated. Fellowships often present numerous tasks that require careful organization and prioritization. Setting realistic daily goals is critical to ensuring that projects are completed without the need to consistently stay late, fostering a healthier work-life balance. Beyond technical skills and time management, cultivating patience is essential. Science is inherently a field where learning and discovery take time; not every skill is acquired overnight. Acknowledging this reality helps in reducing self-imposed pressure and facilitates a mindset focused on growth rather than immediate perfection. In addition to these personal insights, engaging with communities, such as online forums related to #lab, #science, and #biology, expands one’s understanding and connects fellows with resources and support from experienced professionals. Overall, this fellowship experience has not only improved my laboratory proficiency but has also instilled in me the values of patience, time management, and continuous learning.
