Day in my life: First Grade Teacher

Being a first-grade teacher requires a blend of patience, creativity, and organization to keep young learners engaged and thriving throughout the school day. My day often starts with a phonics lesson, focusing on sounds like /u/ and the U_E pattern, where students practice reading and spelling words such as "cute," "tune," and "cube." This auditory and visual drill coupled with letter formation helps solidify their early literacy skills. Math lessons are a highlight as well, often centered on place value and addition with tens, like solving equations such as 34 + 40 or 62 + 20. I encourage students to show their thinking using drawings, numbers, or words, which helps develop their problem-solving strategies and mathematical reasoning. We incorporate fun elements like counting songs by Jack Hartmann to make learning enjoyable and memorable. Science and social studies blend into our routine, with engaging activities such as Groundhog Day predictions and lessons on animal behavior. This approach sparks curiosity and connects classroom learning with real-world events. Small group work allows for individualized attention, supporting diverse learning needs and promoting collaboration. Beyond academics, kindness and social-emotional learning are integral to our day. Activities like kindness donuts or sorting kindness-related words help nurture empathy and a positive classroom environment. I often use interactive reading activities, like "Color by Code" or "Read & Find," to reinforce vocabulary and comprehension skills. Incorporating technology through AR tests and extra math matches also adds a modern touch to the traditional classroom, keeping students engaged with interactive content. Planning and reflection are crucial parts of my teaching. After lessons, I spend time sorting papers and assessing student progress to tailor future instruction. This structured yet flexible routine ensures that each child receives the support they need to succeed.
