20yo brother lost $4K to a scam in the US…

This didn’t happen to me directly, but it happened to my brother today, and I’m stressed and heartbroken for him.

Here’s what happened:

My brother was supposed to go to a concert but had to sell the tickets because of a family wedding. He listed them through Ticketmaster, who told him he’d receive the $190 within 7–10 business days. That day never came.

Frustrated, he went on what he thought was Ticketmaster’s website to contact support—only it wasn’t them. Somehow, he ended up calling a number that wasn’t Ticketmaster at all.

They told him they couldn’t send the money and that he had to “verify” through multiple steps. One of these “steps” was sending hundreds of dollars through Apple Pay, then even more through sketchy bitcoin sites. By the end of it, he had sent them over $4,000.

I still can’t wrap my head around why he kept sending money—he’s a smart kid, and our generation is generally aware of scams like this. When I asked him later, he said the scammers told him to enter “PO Numbers” into their site—numbers like 399, 499, 800—which were actually payment amounts he didn’t realize he was authorizing.

The moment he told us, I made him call his bank, Ticketmaster’s real number, and Apple, hoping there was still a chance to stop it. My whole family was devastated. He’s been such a disciplined saver—more than me, and I’m 23. Watching years of his hard work disappear in hours made me sick.

We didn’t know if we could do anything beyond canceling his card, filing reports, and praying.

Update: Against all odds, my brother got every penny back.

If you ever find yourself—or someone you love—in a situation like this, act fast. Call your bank, contact the real company directly, and fight for your money.

... Read moreFinancial scams have become increasingly sophisticated, particularly those involving popular platforms like Ticketmaster. Scammers often create fake websites or impersonate customer support to trick victims into revealing sensitive information or transferring money. In this case, the victim was misled to enter "PO Numbers" which disguised unauthorized payments amounting to thousands of dollars. It’s crucial to recognize common scam tactics: unsolicited contact, urgent requests for payment or verification, and pressure to use unfamiliar payment methods such as Apple Pay or cryptocurrency platforms. Victims often experience emotional stress and disbelief, even when they consider themselves knowledgeable about scams. If you or someone you know falls prey to such schemes, immediate action can make a difference. Contact your bank to freeze or cancel cards, notify official customer support channels directly, and report the scam to authorities like the Federal Trade Commission (FTC). Prompt reporting increases chances of recovering funds, as seen in this brother’s case where all money was ultimately reclaimed. Educational resources and awareness campaigns are essential for reducing scam success. Encouraging people to double-check URLs, avoid unsolicited links, and verify phone numbers can prevent similar losses. Additionally, financial institutions and companies like Ticketmaster regularly update their guidance on avoiding scams and offer tools like two-factor authentication for added protection. Remember, vulnerability to scams is not about intelligence but often momentary confusion and emotional manipulation. Staying informed, verifying sources, and acting quickly are key strategies to safeguard your money and personal information in the digital age.
