Daily Essentials as a veterinary assistant

As a veterinary assistant you never know what you may need.

I will always have on me:

❤️Owala water bottle - so much better than the stanley and spill proof!!!

❤️notebook - literally use it for everything. From writing notes about labs and how to diagnose a patient to meds and abbreviations

❤️ planner - great to plan out my week and see if I can get extra hours in. Everything is paper written at my office so it shows my boss a good monthly schedule!

❤️ wallet - sometimes we order lunch in or get burritos.

❤️ extra hair ties - you never know when one might snap or someone may need one!

❤️ perfume - scrubs can get smelly, occasionally a spritz of perfume for your drive home can help

❤️ deodorant - good to reapply throughout long and particularly long days

❤️ scrubs - I always kepp and extra set in case something rips or I am working with a highly contagious animal!

❤️ pens & markers - I will always loose one or a doctor will ask and I need extras!

... Read moreBeyond just a quick list, I wanted to really dive into why certain things are non-negotiable for a vet assistant, especially when it comes to staying organized, prepared, and truly effective. You might be looking for 'vet assistant notes,' and honestly, my notebook is probably the most used item in my whole *Nine West tote*! It's not just for jotting down random thoughts; it's a lifeline. When a new patient comes in, my Mead Five Star spiral notebook is out immediately. I'm noting down their history, initial observations, and any concerns the owner has. For ongoing cases, I use different sections for lab results, medication logs (dosage, frequency, administration route are critical!), and even specific instructions from the vet. I keep a dedicated section for common abbreviations and drug dosages – it's a quick reference guide that saves precious time during a busy shift. Good notes ensure continuity of care, clear communication with the veterinarians and my colleagues, and frankly, help me learn and retain so much information. They also serve as a crucial record for legal documentation, so accuracy is paramount. I even use it to sketch out diagnostic flows or treatment plans the vet discusses, which helps me visualize and understand complex cases better. And about professionalism, or perhaps what a 'veterinary assistant logo' truly represents... for me, it's about being ready for anything, and that starts with my daily kit. Every item, from my spill-proof Owala water bottle to my extra scrubs, contributes to my ability to perform my best. It’s my personal 'logo' or trademark of preparedness and dedication. My planner isn't just for personal appointments; it helps me track clinic schedules and ensure I'm available for extra shifts, showing my commitment. Having extra hair ties isn't just a comfort; it's about maintaining hygiene and a tidy appearance, especially when dealing with animals. Even smaller items like my BOMBSHELL perfume for the drive home and Dove Advanced Care deodorant for those extra-long days are essential. They're not just about personal comfort; they contribute to a pleasant and professional environment for both colleagues and clients. And pens and markers? Absolutely vital! You can never have too many. They're the basic tools of communication, whether you're labeling samples or updating charts. Ultimately, everything in my bag helps me embody the skills and care that a vet assistant represents. It's about being proactive, staying sharp, and providing the best support possible to both the animals and the veterinary team. My essentials aren't just things; they're extensions of my dedication to the profession, ensuring I can handle whatever comes my way with confidence and competence.
