Harvest time!

Oh my goodness, fellow plant parents! There’s nothing quite like the feeling of stepping into your garden on harvest day, basket in hand, ready to collect the fruits (and veggies!) of your labor. This year, for our very first family garden, we've had an absolutely incredible 'harvest from my garden' experience. It's truly been a journey of discovery, and seeing all the vibrant produce waiting to be picked is just pure joy. We got so much! Seriously, I walked out thinking, 'Wow, what I got from my garden today is amazing!' One of our biggest successes has definitely been the cucumbers. If you've never tried a homegrown cucumber, you are missing out. The difference from store-bought is genuinely unbelievable – crispier, sweeter, and just bursting with fresh flavor. We've been making simple cucumber salads, adding them to sandwiches, and even trying out some quick pickles to make them last longer. My tip for cucumbers is to pick them regularly when they’re firm and a good size for slicing, but before they get too big and seedy. If you leave them on the vine too long, they can become bitter. Then there are the green beans! Our plants were absolutely loaded. It felt like every plant was just overflowing with long, tender pods. For green beans, I've learned that timing is key. You want to pick them when they're still young and tender, snapping easily. If they start to feel tough or you can see the beans bulging inside too much, they might be past their prime. We've blanched and frozen a good portion of ours, which is a fantastic way to preserve that fresh taste for months. Some have also gone into stir-fries and roasted vegetable medleys. It’s so satisfying to know exactly where our food comes from and that it’s completely fresh, without any weird chemicals. Another fantastic aspect of our harvest day is the sheer abundance. The volume of fresh produce we’ve gathered means we’ve been able to share with family and friends, which is another beautiful part of gardening. There’s a real community spirit in sharing your homegrown bounty. I'm already dreaming up next year's garden plan! Even a small container garden can yield incredible results and connect you with your food in a way that’s truly special.
