Every day in pediatrics brings something new, cute, & exciting! Here’s a little peek into the variety of cases I encountered during my shift:
👶 Newborn Twins – Well Visit & Bilirubin Recheck
These little cuties came in for their routine newborn well visit, and we also checked one of their bilirubin levels. Jaundice is super common in newborns, especially in the first week of life, so keeping an eye on their levels ensures they’re trending in the right direction. Thankfully, they were doing well, and we provided the parents with education on feeding, weight monitoring, and signs to watch for at home!
🩺 2-Year-Old with an Inguinal Hernia – Sent to the ED
A concerned mom brought in her toddler after noticing a bulge near his groin during bath time. On exam, we found a non-reducible inguinal hernia, meaning it wasn’t going away when gently pushed. We sent him to the emergency department for further evaluation and possible surgical intervention. This case was a great reminder of how important it is to catch these things early!
🤒 Sooo Many Flu-Positive Kids
Flu season is still going strong, and we saw so many little ones testing positive today. Symptoms ranged from mild congestion to high fevers and body aches. We spent a lot of time educating parents on supportive care, hydration, and monitoring for red flag symptoms like difficulty breathing or signs of dehydration.
👂 Ear Full of Wax – Flushed Out!
One of the most satisfying things we did today was an ear irrigation on a kiddo who could barely hear due to impacted earwax. After a good flush, out came a huge chunk of cerumen (so gross but also cool), and the patient immediately noticed a difference.
💉 Gave Immunizations as per CDC Guidelines
Keeping kids up to date on their vaccines is one of the most important parts of pediatric care. Today, I gave routine immunizations to several children at different stages of the CDC-recommended schedule. Some were totally unbothered, while others… not so much. But in the end, they all left protected, which is what matters most!
