How to Handle Workplace Toxicity as a Nurse

Starting as a new grad nurse, I expected a steep learning curve, but I didn’t expect the unspoken rule that some experienced nurses wouldn’t be kind about it. I remember asking a simple question and getting an eye roll and a sarcastic, “You should know.” It was disheartening—here I was, eager to learn, and instead of guidance, I felt like a burden.
At first, I let it get to me. I hesitated to ask questions, doubted myself, and even wondered if I had chosen the right career. But then I realized I had two choices: let the negativity shake my confidence or take control of how I handled it. Here’s what helped me:
💙 Finding My People– Not everyone was unkind. I sought out the nurses who genuinely wanted to teach and leaned on them for support. I never felt truly comfortable until I got to night shift with people around my age that supported one another.
