She was seventeen.
She had her whole life ahead of her — plans, friends, music, tennis games, a crush or two.
And then… everything changed.
Chiara Badano was born in 1971 in Italy, the only child of parents who had prayed for her for over a decade. From the very start, she was full of light — cheerful, determined, compassionate, and headstrong in the best way. She wasn’t perfect. She was normal. And she loved Jesus.
As a teenager, Chiara joined a Catholic movement called Focolare, where she learned to live her faith in a radically real way. She was drawn to simplicity, to prayer, to helping others — but she was also just a teenage girl. She loved dancing. She hated math. She spent hours writing letters to her best friend. She planned her future like any other girl would.
But one day, while playing tennis, she felt a sharp pain in her shoulder. It didn’t go away.
Doctors diagnosed her with a rare, aggressive form of bone cancer. The treatments were brutal. Her hair fell out. Her body weakened. Her dreams unraveled. But something deeper took root.
Chiara refused morphine so she could offer her pain to Jesus consciously. She smiled through the suffering. She gave her allowance to other patients. And she began saying something that would echo through her hospital room again and again:
“If this is what You want, Jesus, so do I.”
Chiara began preparing for death the way most girls prepare for prom. She picked out her burial dress — a white gown, like a wedding. She wanted to go meet her Spouse.
She died in 1990, just before her 19th birthday.
In 2010, she was beatified by Pope Benedict XVI and declared “Blessed Chiara Luce” — Chiara of the Light.

Her yes was youthful.
