Cooking experiments: hit or miss? 🍳🔥

Im 26 and honestly… cooking is a rollercoaster for me. Some days I can whip up a pasta that tastes like it belongs in a fancy restaurant, and other days I manage to burn toast (yes, even bread 😅).

I used to avoid cooking altogether until I moved out on my own—no one else was going to make my meals. I started small, like scrambled eggs and sandwiches, and then slowly tried recipes from TikTok and YouTube. One time, I attempted a homemade curry and forgot to add water—let’s just say we ordered pizza that night instead.

Now, I can actually make a few go-to dishes reliably, and I’ve even started experimenting with desserts. Cooking has become more about trial, error, and laughing at yourself along the way than anything else.

... Read moreCooking is often seen as a daunting task, especially when you're just starting out like many in their mid-20s. The rollercoaster experience of cooking, as shared here, reflects a very real and relatable journey for many beginners. The reality is, no one starts as a perfect chef; it’s all about learning through trial and error, which is a big part of developing culinary skills. A common scenario is relying on quick recipes from popular platforms like TikTok or YouTube, which offer creative ideas but sometimes lack detailed instructions or warnings about common mistakes, such as skipping important ingredients like water in curry recipes. These mishaps, while frustrating in the moment, are vital learning points that help refine cooking techniques and boost confidence. Interestingly, cooking mishaps like burning toast or forgetting ingredients can serve as humorous memories and make the cooking experience more enjoyable. Embracing these 'kitchen fails' helps reduce the pressure to be perfect and encourages experimentation, which ultimately leads to discovering go-to dishes that you can reliably prepare. For anyone moving out and taking responsibility for their meals for the first time, starting small with simple dishes like scrambled eggs and sandwiches provides a solid foundation. Gradually experimenting with more complex recipes, including desserts, builds versatility and keeps the cooking process engaging. This journey also highlights the importance of learning life skills such as meal preparation, budget management, and time management, all crucial for independent living. Sharing these experiences with a community, whether through hashtags like #CookingJourney, #KitchenFails, or #Adulting, fosters connection and support among peers facing similar challenges. In summary, cooking for beginners is not about immediate perfection but about persistence, learning from mistakes, and having fun along the way. Every attempt — whether a hit or a miss — contributes to becoming more skilled and confident in the kitchen, turning cooking from a chore into a rewarding part of adult life.
