Hey fellow Night in the Woods fans! If you’re anything like me, you absolutely fell in love with Possum Springs and its quirky, relatable residents, especially Mae Borowski. There’s something so captivating about her grumpy yet fiercely loyal personality, and that iconic design just screams 'cosplay me!' I wanted to share some thoughts and tips from my own experience diving into a Mae Borowski cosplay, especially if you're thinking of putting together your own. First off, nailing Mae’s look isn’t just about putting on a red jacket, though that’s definitely the centerpiece! Her whole vibe is about being a bit rough around the edges, a bit punk, and totally her own person. When I started planning my Mae Borowski cosplay, I realized the details really make the difference. Let's talk about the red jacket. This is non-negotiable. I spent ages looking for the perfect shade of slightly faded, worn-in red. A denim or canvas jacket works best to get that sturdy, lived-in feel. Don't be afraid to add some subtle distressing – maybe a little fraying at the cuffs or hem to show she’s been adventuring. Next up, the jeans. Mae's ripped jeans are key. You can buy a pair already distressed, or grab an old pair and customize them yourself. I found that strategically placed rips, especially around the knees, really add to her rebellious aesthetic. Pair them with some sturdy boots or sneakers – comfort is important for con days! Now for the animalistic features: ears and tail. This was arguably the most fun part for me! For the ears, I used a headband base and crafted them out of faux fur, trying to get that slightly pointed, cat-like shape. Wiring them internally helps them stand up and gives them a bit of poseability. The tail can be made from similar faux fur, stuffed, and attached to a belt loop or directly to your pants. Make sure it has a good swing to it for maximum Mae attitude! And what about the paws? Fingerless gloves in a dark color can work wonders, especially if you add some painted-on claw details or even attach small, pointed felt pieces. For her face, simple but effective makeup can transform you. A black nose, some light whiskers (don't overdo it!), and perhaps even some drawn-on sharp teeth can really bring out her cat features. Don’t forget her messy, dark blue hair – a wig is usually the easiest way to achieve this, styled to look a bit wild and unkempt. One thing I learned was the importance of comfort. Cosplay is a marathon, not a sprint, especially at conventions. Make sure your contacts, wig, and costume pieces are all comfortable enough to wear for several hours. Also, props! While Mae often carries a baseball bat (or sometimes a switchblade), always check convention rules about prop weapons. A lightweight, clearly fake prop is usually fine, but safety first! Putting together my Mae Borowski cosplay was such a rewarding experience. It allowed me to connect with the character on a deeper level and really appreciate the artistry of Night in the Woods. If you’re on the fence about cosplaying her, I say go for it! It’s a fantastic way to celebrate a beloved game and express your creativity. Happy crafting, and remember to "commit crimes" (the fun kind, of course!).
