Hey Lemon8 fam! I'm so thrilled to finally share all the behind-the-scenes magic of my Mae Borowski cosplay! If you're a fellow fan of Night in the Woods, you know Mae isn't just a character; she's a whole vibe. Her snarky attitude, her struggles, and her iconic style make her such a compelling choice for cosplay. I literally poured my heart into this project, and I hope you love seeing how it all came together! Choosing Mae was a no-brainer for me. I connected so much with her story in Possum Springs, and I just knew I had to bring her to life. The first step was, of course, the costume. Mae's look is distinct but also feels very achievable, which I love! Let's talk about the essentials: The Jacket: Her red leather jacket is probably the most recognizable piece. I actually scoured thrift stores for weeks to find the perfect shade of red, and then I added some fabric paint details to get that worn, slightly faded look. Don't be afraid to distress your jacket a bit – Mae isn't pristine! The Shirt & Jeans: A simple black t-shirt and dark blue jeans are staples for Mae. I already had these, which was a huge win! For the jeans, I made sure they were comfortable enough for all the dramatic poses Mae would do. Ears & Tail: This was the fun part! I used faux fur for both the cat ears and the tail. For the ears, I wired them to a headband and then sewed the fur around the wire. The tail was a bit trickier; I stuffed it with fiberfill and added a wire armature inside so I could pose it. Attaching it securely to my jeans was key – nothing worse than a floppy tail! Paws/Gloves: Mae has those adorable little paws! I found some fingerless cat paw gloves online that were perfect, but you could also DIY them with some black fabric and felt pads. Beyond the outfit, capturing Mae's essence was super important. Her makeup is quite minimal but distinct. I focused on a subtle cat eye and giving myself a cute little black nose with face paint. Don't forget her signature eyebrow expression – a mix of mischief and ennui! And let's not forget props! While I didn't make her guitar this time, I absolutely had to have her trusty baseball bat. I found a lightweight plastic one and painted it to match the game's aesthetic. It really adds to the character and gives you something to interact with in photos. The biggest challenge? Probably making sure the tail looked natural and didn't drag on the ground! I ended up using a safety pin system to pull it up slightly. My favorite part was definitely doing the makeup and seeing Mae's face start to appear. It's such a magical moment when your character comes to life in the mirror! If you're thinking about cosplaying from Night in the Woods, I highly recommend it! Whether it's Mae, Gregg, Bea, or Angus, the characters are so unique and offer a lot of creative freedom. It's truly rewarding to embody a character you love. I can't wait to see what other Night in the Woods cosplays you all come up with!
