Learn it before you move

I don’t understand why someone would move to a country without knowing the language well enough to communicate. I work at a hospital, and lately there’s been an increase in people who barely speak English. They struggle with patients, coworkers, and even basic day-to-day interactions.

How can you truly integrate into a community if you can’t talk to the people in it?

Whenever I travel, I at least learn basic greetings and pleasantries — it’s just respectful.

Do you think it’s fair to expect fluency before moving, or is that too much to ask?

... Read moreMoving to a new country without adequate language skills can create significant challenges, both personally and professionally. Language is the gateway to understanding culture, accessing essential services, and building relationships. In healthcare settings, for example, language barriers can lead to miscommunication, impacting patient care and workplace collaboration. Beyond practical communication, learning the local language shows respect for the host community and facilitates smoother social integration. Experts recommend that potential expatriates should at least acquire basic conversational skills and common phrases before relocating. This preparation improves confidence and helps navigate everyday tasks such as shopping, traveling, and meeting new people. Moreover, with today’s wide availability of language learning resources—such as apps, online courses, and community classes—pre-move language acquisition is more accessible than ever. Balancing the expectations around fluency is important; while full fluency before moving is ideal, establishing a foundation of essential vocabulary and cultural understanding can ease the transition and reduce frustration. Many countries offer language immersion opportunities and integration programs that help newcomers improve their skills and connect with locals. Ultimately, learning the language prior to moving fosters mutual respect, enhances employment opportunities, and enriches the overall experience of living abroad. It empowers individuals to contribute meaningfully to their new communities and enjoy a more fulfilling and connected life abroad.
