My Son Wants a Phone… But I’m Hesitant 😅
Like so many moms, I’ve been holding off on giving my son a phone. He uses a tablet with strict time limits and no social media except YouTube with some restrictions. I do my best to keep it balanced.
He goes to his dad’s 3 days a month, and his dad wants to get him a phone for his birthday—and handle the parental controls.
Here’s the text my son sent me:
“Can I get Samsung 24 phone plz I’m mature with TikTok no time limit and discord and YouTube plz, Can the phone be my birthday present”
I hate feeling like the “mean parent” constantly denying this, especially when his dad wants to say yes. Moms, how do you handle situations like this without feeling like the bad guy—or without causing conflict between households?

Many parents face the dilemma of when and how to give their children smartphones, especially when custody arrangements involve co-parenting. It’s completely normal to feel hesitant about handing over a phone, as it opens up new challenges such as managing screen time, social media exposure, and online safety. Since your son’s father intends to gift him a Samsung phone with fewer restrictions, communication between both parents is key to creating a consistent and safe digital environment. You might consider collaborating on shared parental controls that can be managed jointly or establishing clear guidelines about apps and usage. Mobile devices like phones become crucial tools for kids to stay connected with friends and access educational content. However, platforms such as TikTok and Discord can pose risks if left unmonitored. Setting boundaries with limited screen time, disabling unrestricted access to certain apps, and enabling privacy settings can help protect your son without making him feel overly restricted. As your son expresses maturity and a desire for more freedom, it’s helpful to have open conversations about responsible phone use, digital etiquette, and online safety. Involving him in setting these expectations can encourage accountability. Lastly, parents often struggle with feeling like the "mean parent" when enforcing rules. Remember that setting boundaries is an act of care and protection. Sharing your concerns and working as a parenting team with his father can reduce conflicts and show your son that both parents prioritize his well-being. Balancing technology and childhood is a learning process, and many families navigate it successfully through honest dialogue, mutual respect, and gradual introduction to digital independence.

Can you compromise and get him a flip phone? I couldn’t trust a 12 year old with unfettered access to the internet lol.
