I’ve been thinking about going back to school
I’ve been thinking about going back to school to be an X-ray tech. I want to do it. But the moment I think about taking a math class? Instant panic.
I can do basic stuff, but anything beyond that? It’s like my brain shuts down. I had an IEP in high school and was basically just passed along. No one really helped me learn — I just… got through it.
Now I’m older, and I feel stuck. I know I’m not dumb, but math makes me feel that way.
Has anyone gone back to school with major math anxiety? How did you get through it?
Returning to school after some time away can be a daunting decision, especially when facing a subject like math that triggers anxiety. Math anxiety is a common experience affecting many students, including those aiming to enter healthcare fields such as X-ray technology. Math skills are essential in radiologic technology for understanding dosages, measurements, and physics principles involved in imaging techniques. However, struggling with math in the past, especially with limited support during earlier education (such as having an IEP but feeling passed along without adequate help), can create mental blocks. To overcome math anxiety, it is important to approach the subject gradually and with self-compassion. Begin by refreshing basic math concepts through free online courses and tutorials tailored for healthcare professionals. Practice regularly in low-pressure environments to build confidence. Seeking out resources like tutoring, study groups, or academic counseling at your chosen school can provide personalized support. Techniques such as mindfulness and relaxation exercises before studying or exams help calm panic responses. Remember that feeling stuck does not indicate a lack of intelligence. Many students share this challenge and successfully complete programs with perseverance and the right strategies. Embracing a growth mindset—believing that ability can improve with effort—empowers you to move past anxiety. Additionally, joining forums or communities that address #MathAnxiety and #CollegeTalk can connect you with peers facing similar hurdles, offering shared coping tips and encouragement. Being open about your difficulties and seeking help early on increases your chances of success. Pursuing a career as an X-ray tech is achievable when you prioritize your mental well-being alongside your educational goals.

I had to take 2 math classes and used ChatGPT to pass them both ain’t no shame. I suck at math, especially statistics
