My friend ruined the last gift my late boyfriend e

5years ago, before my boyfriend passed away, he gave me this custom, hand-painted, signed copy of The Song of Achilles. It was my birthday gift he even wrote me a note inside the cover. It meant the world to me. (btw i have new bf now but i still value my late bf so much and my bf understand it)

My friend kept begging to borrow it even though I told her it was super sentimental. She said she couldn’t afford her own copy, so I finally gave in… and I regret it so much.

When she returned it, the cover had a coffee ring, the pages were bent, and she annotated the entire thing in bright purple pen. Not deep thoughts just random stuff like “this part reminds me of me and Jason lol.” She even said she “made it more special” because my boyfriend (who was an English major) would’ve loved how passionate she was.

I lost it. I told her she ruined something irreplaceable and needed to replace it or at least take responsibility. She called me selfish and said I was “projecting my grief.” Some of our friends are siding with her, saying “it’s just a book.”

But it’s not just a book. It’s the last thing he ever gave me.
