Did I take it too far?
Okay so I live in a pretty rough neighborhood and my packages get stolen constantly. Like clockwork. So I started shipping everything to my job instead. But I got bored one day and thought… why not have a little fun?
I took some empty Amazon boxes, filled them with literal garbage, added a cute little “message for the thief,” taped them up and left them outside my building just to see how fast they’d disappear.
Answer: under an hour.
Next day I’m taking out my trash and see the boxes crushed up in the recycling bin — with the tape cleanly cut. Meaning the thief… was one of my neighbors. Which honestly blindsided me because I really thought it was random porch pirates, not people I pass in the hallway.
I mentioned it to my landlord and now I’m wondering if I accidentally stirred up drama I didn’t need to. Like, did I low-key set them up? Did they feel embarrassed or targeted? Or am I overthinking it and thieves should just stop stealing?
Was this petty genius or petty chaos?
