What helps with skin elasticity as we age
This is what actually helps with elasticity and how I use them.
As someone in their 40s and with gene mutations that affect my collagen, this is something I’ve researched A LOT:
- Zinc sunscreen every morning:
UV exposure is one of the biggest drivers of collagen and elastin breakdown. Zinc oxide sits on top of the skin and reflects both UVA and UVB, which helps protect the collagen you already have and slows loss of elasticity over time
- Topical vitamin C in the morning under sunscreen:
Vitamin C plays a role in collagen synthesis and also helps neutralize oxidative stress from UV exposure. It can also support your skin’s natural defense against environmental damage
- Astaxanthin daily:
Astaxanthin is a carotenoid antioxidant that has been studied for its ability to help reduce oxidative damage in the skin. Some research shows improvements in skin elasticity and moisture when taken consistently
- Red light therapy a few times a week:
Red and near infrared light have been studied for their ability to support mitochondrial activity in skin cells, which can stimulate collagen production and improve skin density over time
BONUS: Internal collagen AND elastin support with something like Biosil.
Consistency matters more than doing everything perfectly. Protecting collagen is a lot easier than trying to rebuild it later!
Not derm advice, just sharing what has worked for me 🤍
Maintaining skin elasticity as we age is a concern many share, especially when genetic factors impact collagen production. From personal experience and thorough research, I’ve found that a consistent routine focusing on protection and support is key to preserving skin's youthful resilience. The foundation of my routine starts with zinc oxide sunscreen every morning. This mineral-based sunscreen forms a physical barrier on the skin surface, reflecting both UVA and UVB rays. Since UV exposure accelerates collagen and elastin breakdown, daily sunscreen use is essential to slow the natural loss of elasticity. Applying topical vitamin C beneath sunscreen is another cornerstone ingredient. Vitamin C not only supports collagen synthesis but also neutralizes oxidative stress caused by environmental aggressors, including UV radiation. This boosts the skin’s natural defenses and helps maintain firmness over time. I also supplement with astaxanthin daily, a potent antioxidant derived from algae that has shown promising results in clinical studies. Regular intake helps reduce oxidative damage, leading to improvements in skin moisture and elasticity — a benefit I’ve personally noticed with consistent use. Adding to these, red light therapy sessions a few times a week have been transformative. This treatment uses red and near-infrared light to stimulate mitochondrial activity within skin cells, encouraging collagen production and improving skin density. Many find it a non-invasive way to rejuvenate skin texture and suppleness. For additional internal support, supplements like Biosil can provide essential nutrients that aid collagen and elastin formation. While external skincare is vital, nourishing the skin from within completes the approach. The key takeaway is that consistency outweighs perfection. By routinely protecting and nourishing your skin, you can effectively slow elasticity loss rather than trying to fully restore it later when damage has accumulated. It’s a journey that requires patience but yields rewarding results. Sharing these insights is not intended as medical advice but rather as a reflection of what methods have worked effectively for me in supporting skin elasticity naturally and sustainably.
