Oswald letting Thomas feel his face, ears, and arm
That moment Thomas got to feel Oswald's face, ears, and arm at Disneyland during Lunar New Year was truly unforgettable for our family. It's these precious sensory experiences that make all the planning worth it, especially when navigating the parks with an autistic child. Seeing his pure joy and curiosity as he connected with a character in his own unique way was just magical. For other parents out there wondering how to make Disneyland special for their sensory-sensitive little ones, I wanted to share a few things we've learned. First, preparation is key! We always try to look up maps and watch videos of rides and character spots beforehand. This helps Thomas know what to expect and reduces anxiety. Knowing where the quieter spots are, like certain areas in Fantasyland or even some of the less crowded walkways, can be a lifesaver when sensory overload starts to creep in. During festive times like the Lunar New Year Celebration, the parks can be even more stimulating. The beautiful decorations, vibrant music, and delicious smells of the food stalls are wonderful, but they also mean more crowds and noise. We found that going early in the morning or later in the evening often provides a calmer experience. Also, don't underestimate the power of a good sensory kit! For us, this includes noise-canceling headphones, a favorite fidget toy, and a small weighted blanket or vest for when things get a bit overwhelming. Character meet-and-greets can be hit or miss, but moments like Thomas with Oswald remind us how incredible they can be. We always approach characters slowly, letting Thomas lead the interaction. Sometimes, he just wants to wave, other times he's ready for a hug or a unique sensory exploration like with Oswald. It's about respecting their boundaries and letting them engage on their terms. The cast members are usually fantastic and very understanding, often going the extra mile to make these interactions special. Speaking of Lunar New Year, the atmosphere at Disney California Adventure is just incredible. From the beautiful Mulan's Lunar New Year Procession to the delicious food marketplaces offering tastes from across Asia, there's so much to take in. We love seeing the decorations and hearing the festive music. It truly feels like a celebration. Even seeing a sign that says "CHÚC MỪNG NĂM Oswald" (Happy New Year Oswald) just adds to the unique blend of Disney magic and cultural celebration. It’s a perfect example of how Disney creates inclusive and memorable experiences for everyone. We always make sure to pace ourselves, take plenty of breaks, and just soak in the joy of being together in such a wonderful place.
