Choosing to raise a child without screens is a bold and meaningful commitment that reflects deep values about childhood, learning, and family interaction. In my experience, avoiding screens for children encourages them to engage more fully with the world around them, nurturing creativity, imagination, and social skills that can sometimes be diminished by digital devices. Raising my daughter without screens means we focus on activities that foster connection, such as reading books together, playing outdoors, and having conversations that stimulate critical thinking. It’s not just about limiting exposure to technology but creating a rich environment for holistic growth. One of the challenges we've faced is navigating social situations where screen use is common among peers. However, this has become an opportunity to explain our values and inspire curiosity about different ways of learning and entertainment. Another unexpected benefit has been improved sleep patterns, as eliminating screen time before bed helps regulate natural rhythms and promotes better rest for the whole family. We’ve found ourselves more present during family moments, which deepens relationships. Though raising a child without screens may seem extreme in our modern world, it has been a rewarding choice that aligns with our priorities. Sharing this journey can encourage others to reflect on their own family media habits and make conscious decisions that foster healthier, more connected lives.
