At home silk press… what I use
I wash my hair with Raw Sugar Shampoo and Conditioner (not pictured).
I then use Carol’s Daughter Goddess Strength Hair & Scalp Oil (just a little throughout my scalp and massage it in).
I then spray the Not Your Mother’s All Eyes On Me 10-in-1 hair protector as my heat protectant.
While hair is still wet, I spray the Color Wow Extra Strength Dram Coat (which is heat activated).
I use the Revlon Hair Dryer to dry my hair AND then I go in using the BaByliss Pro flat iron (my tried and true).
Once it’s straightened, I spritz a little of the Macadamia Healing Oil Spray and then top it off with the Ouai Hair and Body Mist for a fresh scent (this is optional ofc)!
Achieving a beautiful at-home silk press on long black hair can feel like a salon-level challenge, but with the right techniques and products, it's totally doable! I’ve really refined my method over time to get that smooth and straightened outcome without causing damage. Here’s a deeper dive into how I get my long, straight, dark hair so sleek, focusing on the straightening black hair process from start to finish. First things first, preparation is key for any successful silk press on long hair. After washing and conditioning my hair (I opt for a moisturizing shampoo and conditioner to ensure my hair is properly hydrated before applying heat), I gently detangle it while it’s still damp. This prevents breakage and ensures an even application of products. Next, I apply a small amount of hair oil, like the Carol’s Daughter Goddess Strength Hair & Scalp Oil, focusing on my scalp and massaging it in. This not only nourishes my scalp but also adds a foundational layer of moisture to my strands, which is essential for maintaining hair health during the straightening process. Before I even think about heat, I drench my hair with a good hair protector spray. My current favorite is the Not Your Mother’s All Eyes On Me 10-in-1. This step is non-negotiable for me! It creates a barrier against heat damage, which is crucial when straightening black hair that can be more prone to dryness. Following that, while my hair is still wet, I spray the Color Wow Extra Strength Dream Coat. This product is a game-changer because it’s heat activated and helps to repel humidity, keeping my hair super sleek for longer. It truly contributes to that reflective, smooth and straightened outcome you see in salon silk presses. Now for the drying and styling. I use my Revlon Hair Dryer to get my hair about 80-90% dry, making sure to use a comb attachment to stretch the hair as I go. This helps to pre-straighten and smooth the hair, making the flat iron step much easier and requiring fewer passes. Once my hair is mostly dry, I go in with my BaByliss Pro flat iron, which is my absolute go-to styling tool for straightening hair. I work in very small sections, using a fine-tooth comb to guide the hair through the flat iron. This ensures each strand gets evenly straightened and helps achieve that incredibly sleek finish for my long black hair. After all the straightening black hair is done, I spritz a little Macadamia Healing Oil Spray over my entire head. This adds a beautiful sheen and helps to seal the cuticle, locking in the smoothness. Finally, for an extra touch, I use the Ouai Hair and Body Mist. While optional, it adds a lovely fresh scent and a light, weightless finish. To maintain this gorgeous silk press on long hair for days, I always wrap my hair with a silk scarf or sleep on a satin pillowcase. Avoiding moisture is key, so I steer clear of steamy bathrooms and humid weather when I have a silk press. This routine has truly transformed my at-home styling, giving me salon-worthy results every time for my long black hair!
