Baking heart-shaped buns from scratch is not only a delightful way to celebrate Valentine’s Day but also a rewarding baking experience. I found that the key to achieving soft and airy buns lies in the proofing stages: letting the dough rise slowly in a warm environment ensures the yeast activates well, creating a beautiful texture. Using warm water at about 107°F helps the yeast bloom effectively without killing it. When kneading the dough, I recommend using the low-speed setting on a mixer if available, or kneading by hand for about 10 minutes until the dough is smooth and elastic. This develops the gluten, which is crucial for that perfect rise and chewiness. The addition of both sugar and salt balances the flavor, while the eggs enrich the dough for a tender crumb. After baking, the buns are light golden and have a soft crust with a subtle crumb. Using a heart-shaped cookie cutter once cooled adds a charming, festive touch perfect for any Valentine’s Day table. Brushing the buns with an egg wash before baking gives them a shiny finish and helps the sesame seeds stick, adding a lovely nutty crunch. In my experience, the steps of punching down and re-proofing the dough before shaping helped create even-sized buns with consistent texture. These homemade heart-shaped buns aren’t just for Valentine’s Day; they are also perfect for other celebrations or as a sweet surprise for family and friends. The recipe’s simplicity allows for customization too—adding herbs or cheese to the dough can offer exciting variations. Overall, this recipe combines the joy of baking with the special feeling of handcrafted treats, making your Valentine’s Day celebration extra memorable.
