Valentines Score 🌸🤍
Hey sourdough lovers! Valentine's Day is just around the corner, and what better way to show some love than with a freshly baked, heart-scored sourdough loaf? I recently tried my hand at making a special Valentine's Day sourdough bread, and let me tell you, it was a huge hit! It's such a unique and personal gift, far more meaningful than store-bought chocolates, if you ask me. For my valentines sourdough bread, I used my usual trusted recipe – you know, the one that never lets you down. The real magic, though, happened during the scoring. Instead of my usual simple slash, I decided to get a little creative and turn my loaf into a work of art with a beautiful heart design. It might sound intimidating, but trust me, it’s easier than you think, especially with a bit of practice! Here's how I did my heart scoring: First, make sure your dough is perfectly proofed and chilled. This makes it much easier to score without dragging. I usually pop mine in the fridge for at least an hour before baking. Next, dust your loaf lightly with rice flour. This helps the score stand out and gives it that lovely contrast. Now for the fun part: Grab your sharpest lame (or a very sharp razor blade). For a simple heart, I start by making a curved cut from the top center down to about halfway on each side, forming the two 'humps' of the heart. Then, I connect those two curves with a diagonal cut down to a point at the bottom center. It's like drawing half a heart, then mirroring it! Don't be afraid to go for a deeper cut – about 1/4 to 1/2 inch deep – to ensure a good oven spring and a dramatic opening of your heart design. Sometimes, I'll add a few smaller, decorative cuts around the main heart, maybe some tiny leaves or swirls, just to add a bit more flourish. Remember, confidence is key when scoring! A decisive cut is always better than a hesitant one. Beyond the scoring, you can also infuse other Valentine's touches. Imagine a naturally pink dough using beet powder (just a little bit, so it doesn't affect the flavor too much!) or adding some dried cranberries and white chocolate chips for a sweet-tart surprise inside. I even saw someone shape their entire loaf into a heart, which is definitely on my to-do list for next year! Once your beautiful Valentine's sourdough comes out of the oven, cooled, and sliced, it’s ready to make someone's day. It's fantastic with some good butter, or even as part of a romantic brunch. Wrapping it up with a pretty ribbon makes it an extra special gift. There’s nothing quite like the smell of fresh sourdough, especially when it carries a message of love. Happy baking, everyone! I hope you give this a try and spread some sourdough love this Valentine's Day.
