MY NAIL ARTIST HACKED ME

So good news and bad news. My Meta account was hacked!!! I got a phone call from my bestie asking if it was me she was talking to on Facebook messenger. We sometimes chat there when she’s at work, so it’s not abnormal for her to think I would reach out to her on there. The kicker was I was apparently asking for her to send me 240 pesos through Zelle. Crap. So I go to my Facebook, I’m logged out, I fart in my pants immediately. I go to my email, where it says a recent log in to my business instagram happened in a town an hour and a half away from my location. (See attached photos for screenshots) - I’m immediately suspicious because it’s the town I just got my nails done in a week ago with a new nail artist, who just moved her family and cousins up here from Mexico to help her with her nail shop… I found her on instagram, she was super sweet, but it felt off by how much her cousins were in my space. They wanted to know everything about me, they followed my socials, and a couple friended me on Facebook. I just moved here, so I didn’t think too much of it, I just have been trying to be friendly to make more friends here. Unfortunately I think they took my kindness for granted… I signed up for their “square rewards”. Honestly confused on how we got to this point, but they were passing my phone for my instagram handle for a little while I was getting my nails done. Who knows what -
I tell my bestie to play it cool, ask them for the Zelle username or phone number for the pesos, they give the info - by God, I’m right. It’s the nail artists little cousin. How stupid? I have your phone number saved. She got meeee. I don’t know how, no idea why. My bestie reports the account for fraud and my meta account was suspended. I submitted a claim, showing a video of identity verification. But sadly today I wake up to a permanent disabled meta account. I’ve lost my Facebook, personal and business instagrams. 😔
THOU SHALL NOT FRET, I actually was just ranting on not too long ago about how badly I wish I could just disappear from everyone who knows me. How badly I wished I could post whatever I wanted to post without fear my coworkers, family in law, or family friends would see me. I want to model so badly, and having no freedom of expression on my social media platforms has been holding me back IMMENSELY. Now I have the chance to start over entirely. My uncle can’t see my abs anymore, my 10th grade crush wont watch my thirst traps, and I won’t follow women I envy but can’t unfollow. I’m no longer obliged to keep up with their stinky lives. I can focus more on myself this year and rebuild in a more confident way.

Strong, unique passwords for each site are also non-negotiable. I used to be so lax, but not anymore. It’s also crucial to be aware of phishing scams; those messages asking you to click a link to verify your account or send money (like the Zelle scam my bestie faced) are often traps. Always go directly to the official app or website if you need to check something. Beyond the technical side, my incident with a new nail artist made me realize how much personal information we sometimes inadvertently share. When I was getting my 'nail art' done, I was so focused on the experience that I wasn't thinking about how much data I was giving away. It’s hard to predict who might take advantage of your kindness. Now, I’m much more cautious about who I connect with online, and I think twice before signing up for loyalty programs or sharing my social handles, especially with new service providers. It’s not about being paranoid, but about protecting your digital footprint. This whole ordeal, while initially traumatic, has truly become 'The Kari Diaries' of a new beginning for me. Losing my old Instagram and Facebook accounts felt like a forced digital detox, but it also opened up a path to truly redefine my online presence. For so long, I felt constrained, unable to express myself fully, even holding back on sharing things like my aspirations for modeling or fun 'bikini' photos because of who might be watching. Now, I have the freedom to build a platform that genuinely reflects who I am and what I want to achieve. It’s a chance to create a space where I can share my journey, my passions, and connect with people who resonate with my authentic self. If you're going through something similar, whether it's a hacked Meta account, a digital setback, or just feeling overwhelmed by your online persona, remember that it can be an opportunity for growth. It's okay to feel upset, but also remember you can turn a 'something went wrong' moment into a powerful fresh start. Rebuilding takes time, but it allows you to be more intentional about your content, your connections, and your overall digital life. It's about taking control, learning from the experience, and coming back stronger and more authentically you.
