I found it in its original state, a sturdy piece of dark reddish-brown wood with traditional knobs and pulls, but it definitely needed a new lease on life. I affectionately call it 'Wednesday' now because of its new dark and moody vibe! The first step in any furniture flip is always preparation. This old chest had layers of grime and old finish, so I started by thoroughly cleaning it. Then came the stripping and sanding – probably the most labor-intensive part, but absolutely crucial for a smooth, lasting finish. I wanted to highlight its elegant wood grain, especially on the drawer fronts, so I made sure to get down to the bare wood. Knowing this chest had two small top drawers, two larger top drawers, and three main drawers, I planned a contrasting design to really make it pop. For the body, I decided on a rich, deep black paint. It instantly gave the piece that sophisticated, moody character I was aiming for. For the drawer fronts, I opted for a natural wood stain to create a beautiful contrast with the newly painted black frame. This combination really brought out the antique charm while giving it a modern edge. Choosing the right paint and stain can be tricky, so I always recommend testing on an inconspicuous area or a scrap piece of similar wood first. Of course, no makeover is complete without new hardware! I swapped out the old pulls for some decorative pulls and knobs that perfectly complemented the dark aesthetic. It’s amazing what a difference a small detail like hardware can make. And for an extra touch of personality, I lined the inside of the drawers with a white lining featuring a subtle black branch pattern. It's a hidden detail, but it makes opening the drawers a little delight! For anyone looking to refurbish a chest of drawers, my biggest advice is to be patient. It's a process that takes time, but the reward of seeing your vision come to life is so worth it. Don't be afraid to experiment with colors and finishes.
