One of the things I started doing a long time ago was doing a finish sanding on a satin finish with a small piece of paper bag. It always helps that finish feel much smoother by knocking down the little nibs that might be sticking up. Give it a try if you haven’t and I’m sure you will be surprised how great it works.
On this piece I am using the paper bag on a satin water based top coat from General Finishes.
In woodworking, achieving a smooth finish is crucial for both aesthetics and durability. Many woodworkers use traditional sanding techniques, but there's an innovative method that can significantly improve your results: using a paper bag for final sanding. This technique effectively knocks down tiny nibs on the surface, ensuring a silky touch finish. To start, ensure your satin finish is fully cured. Select a clean, dry paper bag and tear it into a manageable piece. Use a light touch when sanding, allowing the bag's texture to work its magic without removing too much of the finish. This process is especially beneficial for water-based top coats, as they can sometimes dry with a slightly rough feel. Besides improving the overall feel, utilizing a paper bag will also enhance the visual appeal of the finished piece, making colors appear more vibrant. For best results, sand in a circular motion and check your progress regularly. Remember, less is often more when it comes to sanding; you don’t want to oversand and ruin your finish.
