IKEA desk shelf
Time to give this IKEA desk shelf a coat of stain and some finish. I used General Finishes water based black stain to match the existing desk. Then I used General Finishes water based top coat to seal it in. I applied two coats to the entire shelf and then added a 3rd and 4th coat to the top and the sides of the top piece since it would take the most abuse. I gave it a light sanding between coats.
It's amazing how a simple staining project can completely transform an IKEA piece, making it truly your own! When I first got my IKEA desk shelf, I knew I wanted to give it a custom look to perfectly fit my workspace vibe. While the original assembly is straightforward for most IKEA items, like an Eket unit or a general desk shelf, taking that extra step to finish it yourself adds so much character. Think about it – you've just spent time carefully putting together your new desk setup, maybe you're building out a station with an IKEA Fjällbo desk or even looking for clever storage solutions beyond the traditional Alex drawers. That's where custom finishing comes in. After you've got your basic structure, whether it's an Eket shelf or a simple desk riser, prepping it for stain or paint is crucial. I always recommend a light sanding, even if the surface feels smooth, just to give the stain something to grip onto. This step is often overlooked but it makes a huge difference in how evenly your chosen finish applies. For my desk shelf, I opted for a water-based black stain to match my existing desk, and the difference is night and day. If you're building a new setup or integrating new pieces, consider how a unified look can elevate your entire space. For example, if you're looking for an 'alex drawer alternative for desk' storage, a series of custom-stained Eket shelves or even a modified Kallax unit can offer similar functionality with a unique aesthetic. You could even add custom legs or hardware to further personalize it. Choosing the right finish is also key. Water-based stains are fantastic because they dry quickly and clean up easily, which is a huge plus for DIYers. And don't skimp on the top coat! Especially for a desk shelf that sees daily use, multiple coats of a durable top coat, like the General Finishes water-based one I used, will protect your hard work and ensure it lasts. I focused extra coats on the top surface and edges – those are the areas that really take a beating from books, monitors, and daily clutter. Beyond staining, there are so many ways to customize IKEA furniture. You could paint it a bold color, add decorative contact paper, or even incorporate lighting. The beauty of IKEA pieces is their versatility; they're essentially blank canvases. So, whether you're assembling a new Eket storage cube, setting up your workspace with a sturdy Fjällbo desk, or contemplating creative storage solutions that go beyond standard drawers, remember that a little bit of DIY effort in finishing can transform a basic item into a functional and stylish statement piece. It’s all about making your space work for you and reflecting your personal style. Happy building and finishing!
