Jointing some poplar
I broke out the Oliver 8” helical head jointer to put some nice and square 90 degree edges on some 8/4 poplar for a CNC carving. Next we glue these pieces together.
When working with poplar wood, especially for CNC carving, achieving perfectly flat and square edges is crucial to ensure the pieces fit together without gaps or misalignment. Using a helical head jointer, like the Oliver 8" model featured, can make this process more efficient and yield smoother results compared to straight-knife blades, thanks to the smaller, staggered cutters that slice rather than tear the wood fibers. One of my key tips when jointing poplar is to go slow and steady with feed pressure—this prevents tear-out and produces a clean, flat surface that's easier to glue. After jointing, inspecting the edges with a square and straightedge helps catch any minor imperfections. When glueing the jointed poplar boards, I recommend using a high-quality wood glue suitable for hardwoods, applying an even coat on both edges. Clamping is essential for solid bonds—using cauls can distribute pressure evenly across the surface, reducing gaps and preventing uneven joints. Letting the glue cure fully, usually around 24 hours, before moving on to CNC carving ensures the panels remain stable and don’t shift. In addition, poplar is known for its stability and ease of machining, making it a fantastic choice for detailed CNC work. However, it’s a softer hardwood, so taking care during jointing and machining avoids gouging or chip-out, especially with intricate carving. Overall, combining the right tools with proper jointing and gluing techniques guarantees a clean, professional CNC carving foundation. It’s satisfying to see well-prepared poplar boards come together seamlessly, making the finishing process smoother and enhancing the final product’s visual appeal.
