When I first encountered my microlocs unraveling after using conditioner for the first time in two years, it was a frustrating experience that many with microlocs might relate to. Conditioner can sometimes soften the hair too much, causing the delicate twists in microlocs to slip apart. From my experience, rushing to repair without proper technique can worsen the damage. I found that the best approach starts with patience and gentle handling. I used a spray bottle with water mixed with a small amount of leave-in conditioner to lightly dampen the unravelled locs. This softened the hair without over-moisturizing it. Then, with clean hands, I carefully retwisted each loc section, starting from the root towards the end to rebuild the lock's structure. Maintaining microlocs requires avoiding heavy conditioners or oils that can loosen the locs. Instead, light moisturizers and scalp oils help keep the hair hydrated without compromising the hold. Regular retie sessions, approximately every 4 to 6 weeks, help maintain the locs’ firmness and neatness. Also, I found sleep protection indispensable: wrapping my locs in a satin scarf or using a satin pillowcase reduced friction that could cause unraveling. In summary, microloc repair after conditioner damage is about gentle re-twisting, proper moisture balance, and consistent maintenance.
