HCT Review coming from my boyfriend and I (a vegetarian) 🌱🐔
First up the mains, my boyfriend loved the wings but they are not his favorite ever, he is hooked on a local restaurant near us and no ones wings have been able to defeat theirs! He got the wings in the mild spicy. Next, the vegan nuggs and I got the warm spice level. These are definitely good for a veg chicken product but after so many I start to get grossed out by the thought? Vegetarians will understand! 🍗
Sides: baked beans and fries! Love the fries so much, not much else to say here. Baked beans were meh for me I don’t like them to be overly sweet and these lean on the sweeter side. 🫘
Freebies: bread and pickles! I think the bread is to help with the spice? Not sure it’s unnecessary to me lol but the pickles are very good! Classic tangy dill pickle chips with good crunch 🥒
Sauces: ranch, bbq, honey mustard! Ranch is very nicely seasoned! I prefer blue cheese but this ranch is something I would order again. The bbq is also really good, gives off homemade sweet baby rays vibes. Lastly, the honey mustard!! Ugh this was delicious paired with the fries 🍟

First, let's talk about the star of the show – the chicken, specifically the chicken wings my boyfriend enjoyed. Hot Chicken Takeover is famous for its customizable spice levels. While he opted for mild, you can typically choose from 'mild,' 'warm,' 'hot,' and sometimes even 'extra hot.' 'Mild' usually gives you a nice kick without overwhelming your palate, letting the chicken's flavor shine. 'Warm' steps it up a notch, and 'hot' is where things get serious! It’s really helpful to know your tolerance before ordering, as they don't mess around with the heat. For non-chicken eaters like myself, the vegan nuggets are a fantastic alternative. They offer a surprisingly good texture and take on the spice levels just as well as the meat options. While I found them enjoyable, especially with a 'warm' spice, I definitely recommend balancing them with some cooling sides if you're planning a large portion.
Now, onto the sides that truly complete the meal! Their waffle fries are a standout – perfectly crispy, salty, and a great vehicle for all those delicious sauces. They're a definite must-order. The baked beans are a classic, though as I mentioned, they do lean on the sweeter side. If you prefer a more savory bean, you might find them a bit much, but they offer a great contrast to the spicy chicken. And don't forget the sliced bread and pickles! The bread is ideal for soaking up any excess spice, and those tangy, crunchy dill pickles are essential for cutting through the richness and heat. They're not just a garnish; they're a crucial part of the Hot Chicken Takeover experience.
Speaking of cutting the heat, let's not overlook the sauces. Hot Chicken Takeover typically offers a fantastic trio: creamy ranch, smoky BBQ, and sweet-and-tangy honey mustard. The ranch is wonderfully seasoned and provides a cooling effect, perfect for tempering spicier bites. The BBQ sauce has that lovely homemade, slightly sweet quality that pairs well with both chicken and fries. But my personal favorite was the honey mustard – it's incredibly versatile and elevates even the humble fries to a gourmet level! Don't hesitate to ask for a few different ones to try with your meal.
Overall, whether you're there for the fiery hot chicken, the satisfying vegan nuggets, or just to soak in the lively atmosphere often adorned with a vibrant red rooster logo, knowing a bit about the menu and what to expect from the spice levels and sides can really enhance your dining experience. It's a great spot for a casual meal with friends or family, offering something for everyone, from hardcore spice lovers to vegetarians.
