the hardest year of our lives

Last February, our lives changed completely overnight.

My husband woke up one morning with severe chest pain, and deep down I knew something was seriously wrong. We rushed to the emergency room thinking maybe it was something minor… but instead, doctors told us he had a massive hole in his lung. They said if we had waited any longer, he could have died. Hearing the doctor say he was only about an hour away from fatality shattered me.

Everything happened so fast after that. He was rushed into emergency surgery where they placed a drain tube into his lung to keep it from collapsing further. Watching the person you love in pain and not being able to fix it is one of the hardest feelings in the world.

After days in the hospital, we finally thought things were getting better and the tube was removed. But only hours later, the hole reopened and his lung collapsed again. My heart sank all over again. He had to go back on the drain and stay in the hospital longer while we waited for a much bigger surgery.

The next surgery lasted about 5 hours. Those were the longest and scariest hours of my life. I sat there terrified, praying I wouldn’t lose my husband. Thankfully, the surgery was successful, and the doctors repaired his lung and attached it back to the chest wall so it could heal properly.

We are beyond grateful he survived. But since then, life has been incredibly hard. Because of the long recovery, he lost his job, and we’ve been struggling financially ever since. Between regular bills, hospital bills, and trying to keep food on the table while supporting our 4-year-old son and 2-year-old daughter, we’ve been doing everything we can just to stay afloat. Right now, we are facing the possibility of losing our home.

Starting a GoFundMe was not easy for us. Asking for help is one of the hardest things we’ve ever had to do. But the love and support we’ve already received from people — even strangers — has meant more to us than words can explain.

If you’ve shared our story, donated, prayed for us, or even just taken the time to read this… thank you from the bottom of our hearts. Truly.

We’re just trying to make it through one day at a time together, for ourselves and for our babies.

During my husband's hospital stay, it became clear how fragile health can be and how quickly life can shift from normal to emergency. I learned firsthand the importance of emergency medical care and how crucial timely surgery can be in saving lives. The emotional rollercoaster of watching a loved one suffer, enduring multiple surgeries, and dealing with complications is overwhelming. It taught me resilience and the power of hope in the darkest times. My husband’s recovery was not just physical but mental as well, and supporting each other became our daily mission. Financial struggles after such unexpected health emergencies are often underestimated. Losing a job due to long recovery means not only health battles but also the fight to keep basic needs met for our children. Bills pile up quickly, and it’s a stark reality many families face but rarely talk about openly. Starting a GoFundMe was difficult for us, but it showed us the kindness in people. The support we've received—even from strangers—has been heartwarming and a reminder that community matters deeply. Whether through donations, prayers, or sharing our story, every act of kindness helps keep our family from falling apart. For anyone going through similar hardship, don't hesitate to reach out and accept help. It's okay not to be okay. In sharing our story online, I hope to raise awareness about the challenges faced by families after medical crises, including emotional stress and financial burdens. We are just trying to take it one day at a time, grateful for every small victory and the chance to be together as a family. For those who find themselves in similar situations, remember: you are not alone, and there is hope through community and perseverance.
