Impacts of Helene are still occurring in western NC. #wnc #hurricane
Hurricane Helene has caused significant disruptions across western North Carolina. Many areas, including Hurricane and the towns of Valdese, Morganton, and Hendersonville, are experiencing limited or no water access due to submerged pumps and inoperable gauges. As of September 28, 2024, traffic is being diverted on I-40 West at exit 75, and there are reported road closures on Highway 26 between Columbus and East Flat Rock. A lane closure on US 64 near Mill Race Road has also occurred due to a landslide. Emergency responders have reported that there are numerous mudslides in Polk County and a confirmed fatality from one of these incidents. In Ashe County, flood damage has led to several collapsed homes, and many residents are without power. Ongoing rescues are actively being conducted as communities face these serious challenges. With most areas in western NC lacking internet and cell service, reaching out for help and accessing vital resources has become increasingly difficult. The United Way of North Carolina is coordinating efforts to provide assistance to those affected by the disaster.
