Why I Got an “Outdated” Kindle

In an effort to curb my social media addiction I’ve been trying to read more. However, having a Velcro baby and typically only having one hand free, reading physical books is like an Olympic sport and often times leaves me frustrated and stressed out. So I’ve been reading via the Libby app (which is an incredible resource btw) on my phone. As easy as it makes it for me to read whenever and wherever I want, there are a few downsides….

1. Reading on my phone means all of my social media apps are just a few taps away. Even after completely reorganizing and restructuring my Home Screen layout so my reading apps would be easier to access than Instagram or Tiktok I still found myself easily switching over if my attention span waned or there was a lull in the story.

2. Constantly blasting myself and my son with blue light is something I’m really trying to avoid.

3. I want to set a better example regarding screen time. While we aren’t raising our son 100% screen free, I don’t want him to see his mom constantly on her phone even if it’s for something enriching like reading.

So I started my hunt for a Kindle. At first I’d considered starting to set aside the funds for a brand new kindle but a $80-$120 price tag is really hard for me to justify spending on myself. It’s a bad habit/mindset to have, I know, but I am incredibly miserly when it comes to my own wants and needs. So I started searching the resell sites. It took a while for me to find what I wanted at a price I felt comfortable with but finally I found a $30 4th Gen Kindle Touch on eBay.

It is a pretty old device, about 13 years old. Even my husband commented on how old it looked when it was finally delivered just yesterday. But it is in amazing condition and honestly I love and prefer this!

1. I’m a sucker for older devices (think Gameboy, PlayStation 2, iPod nano or iPod touch) since they strike a nostalgic cord for me.

2. Older devices are built to last longer.

3. There is no blue light exposure when reading on this. Yes that means I need an extra light source if I want to read at night but honestly, I’m so exhausted after a full day of raising my 4 month old I don’t have much time to read anyway before I’m dozing off.

Sure, I wouldn’t mind upgrading at some point in the future but for now, this Kindle works great, it fits my needs, and checks all the boxes I want to be able to read without distraction.

Now I just need to find time to crochet a cute yet protective pouch for it 😂.

... Read moreIn today's fast-paced digital world, reading on your phone often leads to distractions from social media notifications and blue light exposure. Many individuals, especially parents, are turning to e-readers like the Kindle to regain focus while embracing a more traditional reading experience. The tactile feel of a Kindle allows for a more immersive reading session, free from the distractions of other apps. Moreover, older Kindle models, such as the 4th Gen Kindle Touch, provide unique benefits like extended battery life and the absence of blue light emissions, making them ideal for evening reading. Many users appreciate the nostalgia associated with older technology. Devices like the classic Kindle are built to last, offering a reliable solution for readers seeking to escape the digital chaos. Additionally, with the increase in second-hand sales and recycling trends, acquiring a budget-friendly Kindle is more accessible than ever. This choice not only enhances the reading experience but also encourages responsible consumption. Ultimately, investing in an outdated Kindle is a savvy way to prioritize reading and focus, paving the way for a more enriching literary journey.

I bought an older Kindle back around Christmas of 2020 with gift cards I got and I still use it today! Absolutely nothing wrong with it and I’ll continue to use it until it completely dies or if I’m given a new one as a gift.
