13 month loc update!
It’s been 13 months this go around for my locs! This is my second time starting them and I’m in love all over again. I learned my lesson with the over bleaching I’ve only bleached my hair once this go around and they are doing so well! ♥️
Embracing the loc journey for a second time has truly been an amazing experience, culminating in this fulfilling 13-month loc update. Seeing my locs flourish after this period brings so much joy and confidence. But getting to this stage, especially after learning lessons from a previous journey, makes me reflect on the earlier phases that many of you might be experiencing right now. For those just embarking on their own journey or wondering what to expect at the 3-month or 8-month mark, I wanted to share some insights from my own path. The beginning stages of starter locs are often the most challenging but also incredibly rewarding as you watch your hair transform. In those first 3 months, you'll likely notice a lot of frizz, and your locs might not look like the perfect, defined cylinders you envision. This is completely normal! It’s the budding phase, where the magic of locking truly begins. My advice for this stage is patience, patience, patience. Keep your hands out of your hair, maintain a gentle washing routine to keep them clean without unraveling too much, and embrace the wildness. Moisturizing with light, water-based sprays is crucial to prevent dryness and breakage, which can hinder the locking process. As you approach the 8-month loc journey mark, you'll start to see more significant changes. By this time, many locs are typically more solidified, and the frizz might have calmed down a bit. You'll notice less unraveling after washes and more density in your locs. This is when regular maintenance, like retwists or interlocking, becomes more consistent for many. However, it’s still important not to overdo it, as excessive tension can lead to thinning. During this stage, I focused on ensuring my locs were getting proper nourishment. I learned how vital it is to avoid harsh chemicals or excessive manipulation that can compromise their integrity. This phase often feels like a bridge between the initial budding and the full maturity of your locs, and it's a great time to experiment with gentle protective styles that don't put too much stress on your roots. The journey to a healthy 13-month loc update, like mine, is built on consistent care and learning from experiences. My biggest takeaway, as mentioned in my current update, was learning from past mistakes, especially with bleaching. While achieving lighter hair can be tempting, the long-term health of your locs should always come first. Using gentle products, protecting your locs at night, and ensuring your diet supports healthy hair growth are all pieces of the puzzle. Every loc journey is unique, but by understanding and nurturing your hair through each stage, from starter locs to a flourishing 13-month milestone, you can achieve beautiful, strong, and healthy locs that you'll absolutely love.
