Times & Seasons
Discerning times & seasons is the spiritual ability to recognize what God is doing, what He is requiring, and how we should respond in a particular season.
1 Chronicles 12:32:
“The children of Issachar, which were men that had understanding of the times, to know what Israel ought to do…”
Notice they had two things: understanding of the times and knowledge of what to do. Discernment is not simply recognizing that a season has changed; it is knowing how to move because it has changed.
Discerning times and seasons is more than just noticing changes in life; it’s about spiritual awareness and timely action. Through my own experience, I’ve found that cultivating this discernment requires quiet reflection, prayer, and attentiveness to both inner promptings and external circumstances. Much like the children of Issachar in the Bible, who understood the seasons and knew what to do, we too must develop the ability to sense the rhythms of life and respond effectively. In practical terms, this can involve recognizing when to pursue new opportunities, when to pause and reassess, or when to shift our mindset to align with a new spiritual phase. For example, during a challenging period in my life, reflecting on Scripture and seeking spiritual insight helped me to understand that it was a season of growth rather than defeat. This awareness empowered me to remain hopeful and proactive rather than discouraged. Spiritual discernment also plays a critical role in community and leadership settings, as the insight to know "what Israel ought to do" can guide collective actions for greater impact. Developing this skill often emerges from consistent spiritual practices and openness to divine guidance. Therefore, discerning times and seasons is ultimately about aligning ourselves with God’s purpose and timing, enhancing our ability to navigate life with wisdom and faith.
