It's moments like these that truly remind me why I LOVE TEACHING MIDDLE schoolers. Seeing one of my students embrace the spirit of the Lorax – a figure so iconic for speaking for those who cannot – to advocate for trans rights was just... profound. The Lorax, for many, symbolizes environmental protection, but at its core, it's about standing up for what's right, for the vulnerable, for the future. This student's choice to embody that while discussing TRANS INCLUSION felt incredibly poignant and powerful. They literally wore the full Lorax costume, complete with those iconic eyebrows and mustache, delivering such a serious and important message. It was a beautiful blend of creativity and conviction. It got me thinking about how we, as educators, can continue to create spaces for such authentic self-expression. WE KNOW THIS kind of genuine engagement is what makes learning stick. For any teachers out there, don't underestimate the power of letting kids choose topics they're truly passionate about. Whether it's through writing, a video, or even dressing up, giving them that agency can unlock incredible insights and powerful messages. They really WANTED TO SHARE their perspectives. It truly builds a classroom where every voice is valued and respected. This experience was a powerful reminder that youth today are incredibly aware and ready to champion causes. Providing a platform, even a simple 'soapbox,' can lead to unexpected and deeply moving moments that resonate far beyond the classroom walls. I didn't pre-screen anything because I wanted it to be from the heart, to be authentic. And it absolutely was. The impact of that Lorax, speaking so passionately about TRANS RIGHTS, will stay with me for a very long time.
