You might have just seen my detailed pencil drawing of the majestic Foreverwing dragon from How to Train Your Dragon (HTTYD) – I spent so much time getting those prominent spikes and that impressive large head just right on my notebook paper! The Foreverwing is such a fascinating creature in the HTTYD universe, isn't it? Its sheer size and the way it guards dragon eggs always captivated me. It's not as commonly drawn as Night Furies or Light Furies, which is why I was excited to give it a try. When I started this pencil drawing, I really focused on studying reference images to capture its unique anatomy. For any fellow aspiring dragon artists out there, I found sketching the basic shapes first – like the large oval for the head and a long, curved line for the body – really helps lay down the foundation. Then, I gradually added the more intricate details. For the spikes, I recommend varying their size and direction to make them look more natural and menacing. Shading is absolutely key for making any dragon drawing pop off the page! I used different pencil grades to create depth, especially around the eyes and under the jaw. The texture of the notebook paper itself can sometimes add an interesting, raw element to the drawing, making it feel more spontaneous and 'in the moment.' My go-to for a detailed pencil drawing like this is usually a set of drawing pencils (HB, 2B, 4B, 6B are my favorites) and a good kneaded eraser. Don't be afraid to make mistakes; that's what erasers are for! I also love using blending stumps or even just a cotton swab to smooth out graphite and create softer shadows. Drawing dragons, especially complex ones like the Foreverwing, can seem daunting, but it's incredibly rewarding.
