5 Most Disturbing Books 😨

2024 brought a new favorite genre to me: literary fiction with a sub genre of horror and thriller (more often than not - body horror!!!)

Here are my top five books of 2024 that disturbed me in there own unique ways 😳😂

(please check trigger warnings)

5. Bunny by Mona Awad: an MFA writing program with an insatiable clique of women have to adjust to a hard-to-impress newcomer with different tastes (body horror, gore, dream sequences, psychosis)

4. Motherthing by Ainslie Hogarth: after moving into the house of her recently passed mother-in-law, Abby thinks her life is finally getting settled - until her mother-in-law comes back to haunt them

(paranormal, c*nnibalism, gothic horror)

3. Lapvona by Ottessa Moshfegh: in a medieval village, impoverished peasants work to support a greedy nobleman

(body horror, c*nnibalism, historical fiction)

2. Chlorine by Jade Song: how far will a high school swimmer go to make her dreams of being a mermaid come true?

(body horror, coming-of-age, lgbtq+)

1. Earthlings (or literally anything) by Sayaka Murata: from childhood to adulthood, a girl who believes she is an alien does everything she can to prevent society’s expectations to take hold

(coming-of-age, psychological horror, bildungsroman)

Hope these books suck you in as quickly as they did to me!

2024/12/8 Edited to

... Read moreIt's funny how a new year can completely shift your reading tastes! Like many of you, I've always enjoyed a good book, but 2024 really pulled me into a fascinating, albeit unsettling, corner of literature: the truly disturbing. The OCR phrase "the most disturbing books I read this year" perfectly captures my recent journey. These aren't just your typical jump-scare horror novels; we're talking about stories that burrow deep into your psyche, leaving a lasting impression long after you've turned the final page. What makes a book truly "disturbing"? For me, it's about more than just gore or explicit scenes. While some of the books on my list touch on body horror or intense psychological distress, the real disturbance comes from the way they challenge your perceptions, push boundaries, and explore the darkest corners of the human (or inhuman) experience. These are the "scary stories that went too far" not in terms of gratuitousness, but in their unflinching portrayal of uncomfortable truths or extreme situations. They force you to confront aspects of existence you might rather ignore, often blurring the lines between reality and nightmare. You might wonder, why would anyone want to read something so unsettling? For me, there's a strange kind of catharsis and intellectual stimulation in it. These books often tackle complex themes like societal pressures, identity crises, and the fragility of sanity. They can be incredibly well-written literary pieces that use disturbing elements to make profound statements. If you're looking for books with "sex and violence," you'll find that in this genre, these elements are often not for shock value alone, but serve to illuminate character, expose societal flaws, or delve into the psychological degradation of characters. It's about exploring the depths of human depravity or resilience through a fictional lens. Navigating such intense reads requires a bit of preparation. I always recommend checking trigger warnings beforehand. Themes like cannibalism, psychosis, and various forms of abuse can be incredibly confronting, and it’s important to know what you’re getting into. Taking breaks is also crucial; sometimes you need to step away for a bit to process what you’ve just read. If you're eager to dive deeper into this genre and find more "world most horror book" contenders or "books like American Psycho," here are a few tips. Seek out authors known for transgressive fiction or extreme horror – these often explore themes of moral decay, societal breakdown, and characters pushing beyond accepted norms. Look for literary fiction with strong psychological elements, especially those listed under "dark academia," "body horror," or "surreal fiction." Websites like Goodreads or dedicated BookTok communities often have excellent recommendations for these niche, yet captivating, reads. Don't be afraid to read reviews, but try to go in with an open mind, understanding that what one person finds disturbing, another might find thought-provoking. Ultimately, these disturbing books aren't just about shocking you; they're about making you think, feel, and sometimes, even question your own reality. They've certainly left an indelible mark on my reading year, and I hope my recommendations help you discover some equally unforgettable, and perhaps unsettling, literary experiences of your own!
