Snow in Houston

Living in Houston, Texas, you quickly learn that 'winter' here is a unique experience, definitely not what most people imagine when they picture cold weather! I often get asked, 'What are winters like in Houston, Texas?' and my answer usually starts with, 'Mild, with surprises!' Unlike up north, we rarely see significant snow. My original post was actually inspired by one of those incredibly rare occurrences when Houston got a dusting—it was such a novelty, everyone was out taking pictures! But to be clear, if you're hoping for a white Christmas, Houston isn't your spot. Snowfall here is truly exceptional, happening perhaps once every few years, and usually it melts almost as soon as it touches the ground. It's more of a fun, fleeting event than a season-long phenomenon. So, what can you actually expect? Our winters are generally short and mild. Daytime temperatures often hover in the 50s and 60s Fahrenheit (10-20°C), making it pleasant for outdoor activities. You'll still see people in shorts and t-shirts on a sunny winter day! However, don't let that fool you completely. We do get our share of cold fronts. When these fronts blow through, temperatures can drop significantly, sometimes dipping into the 30s or even 20s Fahrenheit (-1 to -7°C) overnight. The humidity can make these colder temperatures feel even more biting than the thermometer suggests, so a good warm coat is still essential for those chillier days. One of the most distinctive features of a Houston winter is its unpredictability. You might have a beautiful, sunny 70-degree day followed by a cold snap that brings temperatures down by 30 degrees overnight. Layering is key! I've learned to always have a light jacket, a sweater, and maybe even a scarf handy, because you never know what the weather will decide to do. Rain is also a common companion during the colder months, so an umbrella or a water-resistant jacket is a smart addition to your wardrobe. Despite the lack of traditional winter weather, there's still a lot to enjoy. It's the perfect season for exploring local parks, enjoying outdoor patios without the intense summer heat, or visiting the Houston Zoo or NASA Space Center. Holiday lights displays are spectacular, and since it’s rarely freezing, it’s comfortable to stroll around and soak in the festive atmosphere. Personally, I love that I can still go for a walk or enjoy a coffee outside without bundling up head-to-toe for months on end.
