Behind the Song : Patches
Favorite Line : "I don't know if these patches, can hold back a damn this deep."
Patches was written after emptying my apartment to move in with family, and reflecting on my time there. The apartment had seen me through a lot. Divorce, layoffs, finding music. I decided to pull in some parts of poems that I hadn't been able to use yet. I created the melody while looking at the patched walls and getting emotional about my time there.
Creating a song like 'Patches' is a deeply personal experience that resonates with many who have faced periods of change and emotional challenge. From my own experience, moving out of a longtime home or apartment often brings a flood of emotions tied to memories stored within those walls. Just like the artist reflected on patched walls and personal struggles such as divorce and layoffs, these moments of transition offer fertile ground for creativity. When I moved recently, I found myself revisiting old poems and thoughts that had been shelved, much like the songwriter pulling in unused parts of poetry. This process can transform raw feelings into art, allowing you to channel complex emotions into melodies and lyrics that tell a story. The emotional weight behind songs like 'Patches' often stems from an intimate connection to place and time, where even small physical details—patched walls or worn floors—become symbols of endurance and healing. Incorporating such personal elements into songwriting not only adds depth but also helps listeners relate on a human level. This approach aligns well with the #emotionalmusic and #songwritinginspiration tags, highlighting how artists draw from real-life experiences to inspire creativity. If you're a writer or musician, reflecting on your own transitions and feelings can unlock profound songwriting inspiration and help craft songs that truly speak to others.
