From my own experience, a dead battery can give a false sense of security since you might not hear the alarm when there's a real emergency. I make it a habit to change the batteries at least twice a year, usually when the clocks change for daylight saving time. This is also a good time to test the alarm's sound to ensure it's working properly. Many people overlook this small but crucial maintenance step, probably because the low battery chirp can be annoying. However, think of it as a lifesaver's reminder. Smoke alarms are our first defense against fire hazards. Apart from changing batteries, you should also clean dust from the detectors as dust and insects may interfere with the sensor. If your smoke alarm is more than 10 years old, it's time to replace the entire unit because sensors degrade over time. And don't forget to install alarms on every floor, in bedrooms, living rooms, and near kitchens (but not directly in the kitchen to avoid false alarms). Regularly scheduled checks and battery replacements can dramatically reduce fire-related risks and protect you and your loved ones effectively.
